Berlin, late 19th century. At the zoo, young Helen Grund discovers, in a brutal way that will mark her for life, that an innocent gesture can kill; a mixture of power and guilt is born within her, which will become her defining trait. She makes a secret pact with her beloved brother Fritz: if one cannot live freely, the other will live for both of them. This promise will haunt her forever, especially after her brother’s untimely death.

In Berlin, she meets Franz Hessel: a brilliant writer, an imperfect reflection of her own inner turmoil. He encourages her to move to Paris, but Helen discovers that love and motherhood are tearing her identity apart.
When she reunites with Pierre Roché, a new world opens up: a love that is rawer, more dangerous… more genuine?
An impossible harmony unfolds between the three of them: Franz wants her to be free, Pierre wants her to be whole, Helen cannot choose. Their trio invents a freedom that does not yet exist. But this freedom comes at a price. It draws Helen into a spiral of abandonment, sudden departures, disappearances and deliberate escapes.
